Where the Experience Fell Short
Problem Definition
GoDaddy’s existing search tool worked well for users who already had a name in mind. It could generate variations and suggest alternatives when domains were unavailable. But for users without a clear idea, the experience fell flat. With no guidance, many abandoned the site entirely and potentially turned to competitors instead.
The challenge was clear. I needed to create a seamless solution that would help users brainstorm names from scratch while preserving the functionality that worked well for those with specific ideas.

Spotting the Overlooked and Prototyping the Fix
Discovery and Approach
To understand user needs, I started by working through past interviews and survey data without a fixed hypothesis, looking for patterns others may have missed. That’s when I uncovered a clear but overlooked problem: users consistently fell into two groups, those with a name idea and those without. We had always focused on the first group and ignored the second.
To validate this, I partnered with a researcher to speak directly with small business owners, confirming the gap. I then analyzed competitor offerings to identify opportunities for differentiation and organized a team for an upcoming internal hackathon. There, we rapidly prototyped solutions using newly released LLM technology through GoDaddy’s internal partnership with Microsoft and OpenAI. We tested the tool live with users, and their feedback directly shaped our next iteration.
